Bundala National Park – adjoining & 1.4 km to the entrance gate

With seven terrestrial habitat types and six wetland types, Bundala National Park is a unique intersection of land, sea, and wetland, and possesses rich biological wealth. It houses as many as 383 species of plants, such as the endemic Manilkara hexandra forest east of Bundala village, and 324 species of vertebrates, including the toque macaque.

A delight for ornithologists’ all over the world, Bundala National Park is an important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka (it’s home to an astounding 197 species of birds!). Undoubtedly, the highlight of the park is the greater flamingo, which makes for a spellbinding sight as they migrate in large flocks. A must for all nature lovers, Bundala embodies the very best of natural treasures in Sri Lanka – little wonder it was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1969, redesignated to a national park in 1993, and designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2005!

Best time to visit the national park would be in the early mornings or late afternoons, during wildlife is at its most abundant.
